Steel Strip Expansion Joint Installation & Maintenance Protocol

Phase 1: Blockout Preparation

Construct clean, dimensionally accurate blockout recesses on both sides of the bridge expansion gap. Ensure concrete surfaces are sandblasted, free of debris, grease, or loose laitance, exposing sound aggregate.

Phase 2: Joint Alignment & Presetting

Position the pre-assembled Steel Strip Expansion Joint in the blockout. Adjust top surface elevation precisely to match asphalt pavement slope and preset the joint gap width according to ambient bridge installation temperature.

Phase 3: Anchor Welding & High-Strength Concrete Pouring

Weld loop anchor studs securely to the deck reinforcement rebar. Pour non-shrink high-strength elastomeric concrete or fiber-reinforced grout (such as KEMGROUT 58) into the blockout, ensuring thorough compaction under edge beam rails.

Phase 4: Continuous EPDM Strip Installation

After concrete curing, clean the edge beam profile channels. Apply lubricant adhesive and mechanically lock the continuous EPDM rubber strip seal into the steel rails from end to end using specialized insertion tools.

Preventive Maintenance Checklist

  • Annual inspection of EPDM sealing element for physical damage or debris accumulation.
  • Clean drainage gutters and clear dirt from neoprene ribs using high-pressure water jets.
  • Inspect anchor concrete blockout edges for micro-cracks or spalling.
